Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) warmly welcomed a new cohort of over 1,200 students from across Pakistan at the Orientation 2024 event. The week-long program, designed to inspire, connect, and prepare students for the academic journey ahead, featured a blend of innovative activities and engaging events.
Speaking to the parents of new students, Vice Chancellor Dr Ali Cheema highlighted the significance of a broad-based education in the rapidly evolving job market. “Technological advancements will lead to significant disruption in the job market, requiring students to be flexible and adaptable,” Dr Cheema stated. “At LUMS, our curriculum is designed to equip young adults with a diverse skill set, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning. Our goal is to develop holistic individuals with real leadership potential in any field they choose.”
Throughout the Orientation 2024 program, incoming students had numerous opportunities to interact with faculty and peers. The sessions provided guidance on first-semester courses, the LUMS Code of Conduct, and strategies for balancing academic and extracurricular activities. Faculty panels addressed topics such as personal effectiveness, social maturity, and choosing a major. The program also featured engaging social activities and sports competitions, with the highlight being a memorable batch photo.
Dr Adnan Zahid, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), praised this year’s orientation for its comprehensive support to the incoming undergraduate students. “We offered a diverse array of sessions, from academic integrity and course enrolment to engaging social events, to ensure a smooth transition into university life,” Dr Zahid remarked. “Valuable alumni panels were also organized to provide guidance and insights.”
The success of the orientation was made possible by over 700 sessions organized by various campus offices and student bodies. The Student Orientation Committee, Orientation Coaches, Deputies, and Peer Ambassadors at LUMS for Social Support (PALSS) played pivotal roles in the program’s execution.
Provost Dr Tariq Jadoon extended a warm welcome to the new students, saying, “Congratulations on making it to LUMS! Joining a university is a significant transition, and our orientation sets the tone for the journey ahead. This year’s event emphasized the importance of being prepared for classes, balancing activities, and taking advantage of the diverse programs offered. Among Pakistan’s brightest talent, some students may initially find themselves below the mean, but that’s not a bad place to be if learning and growth are taking place. The success of LUMS alumni is defined by the rich experiences and opportunities they embrace, not just their grades. LUMS has been pioneering in many ways, driven by exceptional faculty and a steadfast commitment to merit.”
Orientation 2024 successfully laid the foundation for the incoming batch, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead at LUMS.
