Maryam Nawaz Faces Criticism Over Textbook Content

Senior journalist Junaid Saleem has sparked a controversy by claiming that Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has played a pivotal role in the inclusion of a new chapter in the 10th-grade Pakistan Studies textbook. The chapter, titled “The Role of Women in Pakistan’s Development,” allegedly features Maryam Nawaz’s name and photograph, along with that of her late mother, former First Lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

The chapter is reportedly framed to celebrate the contributions of women in shaping Pakistan’s future, spotlighting the achievements of key female figures. However, the inclusion of Maryam Nawaz and her mother has drawn criticism from various quarters, with detractors accusing the government of promoting political figures through educational content.

“This is not about acknowledging women’s contributions; it’s about using the curriculum for personal glorification,” remarked a political analyst on the matter. “Our textbooks should remain free from political bias and focus on unbiased historical narratives.”

The development has ignited a debate over the intersection of education and politics. While proponents argue that highlighting prominent women’s contributions is essential for inspiring future generations, critics see it as a troubling precedent of blending political promotion with educational reform.

Education authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing these allegations. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have seized the opportunity to call for greater transparency in curriculum development, emphasizing the need to prioritize educational integrity over political agendas.

Public opinion remains divided, with some supporting the move as a positive step toward recognizing women’s roles in society and others questioning the motivations behind the inclusion.

As the debate continues, the lack of official clarification leaves questions unanswered about the process and criteria used to include the chapter in the national curriculum.
