Miftah Ismail praises IUB’s research services

Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has appreciated the research activities of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) which are very important in the country’s economy.

This was expressed during a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, the IUB Engr Prof Dr Athar Mahboob at the office of the Federal Ministry of Finance. He said that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur’s research on cotton varieties is very important for the country’s textile industry and he is happy to know that the IUB has researched very positive results in other agricultural fields apart from the cotton field.

On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor Engr Prof Dr Athar Mahboob said that the research projects of the IUB are adding 30 billion dollars to the country’s economy annually, which can improve Pakistan’s economy and the university’s contribution to the country. He said that the cotton varieties of the IUB have excellent production and are effective against diseases in local climatic changes and cotton seeds of the IUB are grown on 50% of the cultivated area of Punjab.

On this occasion, the Vice-Chancellor told the Federal Minister of Finance that the IUB in collaboration with Chinese University is also working on intercropping technology by which soybean and maize crops are grown in the same field, which will provide the country with poultry feed and edible oil. In this way, billions of rupees of foreign exchange will be saved. He informed about the establishment of an agro-economic zone in Cholistan and the research of scientists of the IUB about an artificial rain project in this regard.

He said that the plan to increase the rains can turn Cholistan into a fruit basket and it can add 10 billion dollars to the annual agricultural economy of Pakistan. He invited the Federal Minister to visit the IUB and review these research activities in detail. During the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor also informed the Federal Minister about the development projects worth Rs 12 billion in the IUB, including the Rs 4 billion projects of the federal government, the major development projects of Rs 4 billion under public-private partnership and the university’s Rs 4 billion projects from our own sources are included.
