The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its position as the top engineering university in the world, per the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 released Tuesday.
MIT topped the QS subject list 2019 by securing an overall score of 97.6, while it scored 99 for academic reputation, 94.6 for employer reputation, 93.3 for H-index citations and 95.3 for citations per paper.
The top engineering university in the world was followed by Stanford University in the second place. Like MIT, Stanford also retained its position in the ranking. The university received an overall score of 94.2, while it scored 88.9 for academic reputation and 95.5 for employer reputation. Stanford even outclassed MIT for H-index citations and citations per paper, scoring a perfect 100 in each category.
The third place in the 2019 saw a change in names, as last year’s third best engineering university, Cambridge University, was replaced by ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Cambridge itself dropped down to the number fourth spot. Cambridge’s slip down the ranking could be a result of a fall in its employer reputation score, which went down from 100 in 2018 to 97.8 in 2019, for that was the only individual score the university performed poorly compared to last year. ETH Zurich ranks number seven in the QS world university rankings and is regarded as one of the leading universities of the world in science and technology.
There was also a change at the fifth spot, with University of California, Berkeley (UCB) pushing last year’s number five – Nanyang Technological University, Singapore – to the sixth position. UCB moved up six spots from its 2018 ranking of 11, riding on the strength of its citations per paper (97.7) and H-index citations (95.3).
Nanyang shared the sixth spot with University of Oxford, which moved up two spots from last year’s eighth position. It was followed by Imperial College London and National University of Singapore (NUS) who grabbed the joint 8th position. China’s top university, Tsinghua University, secured 10th spot in the QS subject rankings 2019.
As a whole, the US had most institutions featured among the top 500 engineering universities of the world with 94 entries, followed by the UK with 38 entries, China with 34, Germany with 25 universities, Canada having 21 and Australia having 20 institutions in the engineering and technology universities ranking.
