The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan hosted representatives from the Canada-based National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) and the Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PNMC) on Monday. NNAS, a not-for-profit, pan-Canadian credentialing service provider for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) seeking licensure in Canada, is in Pakistan to review and assess the country’s nursing educational standards.
The NNAS delegation’s visit aims to streamline the process of evaluating the credentials of Pakistani registered nurses applying to work in Canada. This includes an assessment of the nursing curriculum, its delivery in educational institutions, and the regulatory functions overseeing nursing education in Pakistan.
The HEC welcomed the delegation, which included NNAS representatives Ms Cinnamon Stacey, Director of Research & Assessment; Dr Ramesh Venkatesa Perumal; and Ms Dilshad Pirani, Consultants. They were joined by Mr Asif Khattak, Director MIS of PNMC, and representatives from the Canadian High Commission. Virtually attending were Dr Raisa Gul, Professor and Dean at Shifa College of Nursing, Islamabad, and Ms Rubina Qasim from the Dow Institute of Nursing and Midwifery, Karachi.
Dr Zia Ul-Qayyum, Executive Director of HEC, and Dr Amjad Hussain, Director General of HEC’s Academics Division, welcomed the delegation. Dr Zia Ul-Qayyum reaffirmed HEC’s support for the collaboration between NNAS and PNMC, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to aligning its nursing education with global standards.
“The HEC is dedicated to working with international partners to bridge curriculum gaps and foster structural improvements in the healthcare sector, particularly within the nursing profession,” Dr Zia stated. He highlighted HEC’s efforts in transnational education, institutional affiliation policies, and the alignment of the national qualifications framework and curriculum development processes with international standards.
Ms Cinnamon Stacey briefed the attendees on NNAS’s role in verifying the credentials of IENs to aid Canadian regulatory bodies in making informed licensing decisions. She expressed appreciation for HEC’s support in promoting international excellence in nursing education through standardized curricula and fostering global collaborations.
The meeting underscored the importance of international partnerships in enhancing the quality and recognition of nursing education in Pakistan, ultimately benefiting nurses seeking to work abroad and strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
