The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Centre for International Peace & Stability held an expert panel discussion on “Pak-Afghan Relations: The Future Prospects”.

Ambassador (R) Syed Abrar Hussain, Chairman  Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Islamabad, Major General (R) Inam Ul Haq, Mr Imtiaz Gul, Executive Director of the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) and Professor Dr Azmat Hayat, Vice-Chancellor University of Peshawar (UoP) were the key panelists.

The seminar began with welcome remarks by Professor Dr Tughral Yamin, Associate Dean CIPS, and was followed by Associate Professor Dr Aqab Malik’s comprehensive assessment of the current situation of Pakistan-Afghan relations, which set the tone for the discussion.

Ambassador (R) Syed Abrar Hussain addressed the panel on the prospects of strategic partnership for regional peace through mutual geopolitical interests and sustainability through people-to-people interaction. He discussed the strategic importance of Afghanistan and Pakistan’s bilateral ties in terms of socioeconomic, political, commerce, and people-to-people interaction.

The framework for understanding the structural intricacies of the connections with emphasis on convergent security patterns and reconciliation through effective diplomatic contacts was shared by the second speaker, Major General (R) Inam Ul Haq. He discussed different variables affecting Pak- Afghan ties and the structural difficulties of Pakistan and the now Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).

Mr Imtiaz Gul shared his insightful remarks on, “Emphasis on objectively identifying mutual inclusiveness and convergent security patterns and reconciliation through effective administration, diplomatic relations, media projections and shared public opinion”.

Dr Azmat Hayat, former Vice-Chancellor of Peshawar University, finished the panel discussion by commenting on the nexus of policy, research, and practice of peace education in addressing conventional and non-traditional issues. He comprehensively explained the historical roots of the issues facing Pak-Afghan relations and also underlined the importance of understanding the complexities of not only Afghan society but also Pakistan’s western border regions.

Following the expert panelists’ session, the seminar was opened for a panel discussion and a Q&A session which was expertly moderated by Dr Aqab Malik. The closing remarks were delivered by Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Salim Raza HI (M), Principal NIPCONS. At the end of the ceremony, Principal NIPCONS offered mementos to the honorable speakers on behalf of CIPS.
