In a move to bolster educational collaboration, Pakistan and Russia have pledged to enhance partnerships between universities in both countries, particularly in emerging technologies. This commitment was made during a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Thursday, signaling a new chapter in educational diplomacy between the two nations.
A Russian delegation, led by Andrey Korneev, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Education, and Konstantin Mogilevsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, visited Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of Education and Professional Training (MoFEPT). The delegation also included a consultant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, an associate professor from Ural State Pedagogical University, and officials from the Russian Embassy.
During the meeting, Federal Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani presented an overview of Pakistan’s educational landscape, highlighting both achievements and ongoing challenges. The discussions revolved around strengthening bilateral educational ties and fostering cultural exchanges, with a particular focus on cutting-edge fields such as emerging technologies.
An official press release noted that both parties expressed strong enthusiasm for collaboration, emphasizing the potential of technology-driven partnerships. The Pakistani delegation stressed the importance of expanding university collaborations, while the Russian Deputy Minister highlighted the need to promote Russian language programs in Pakistan and deepen educational linkages.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the agreement to establish a Russian Facilitation Centre in Islamabad, aimed at supporting Pakistani students seeking admission to Russian institutions. The Russian delegation also proposed hosting a Russian Educational Expo in Pakistan, which would promote technological and industrial cooperation between the two countries.
In addition to the formal discussions, the Russian delegation visited Islamabad College for Girls (ICG), where they praised the Ministry of Federal Education’s efforts to enhance education, particularly for young women. Both sides agreed to formalize their collaborative plans at the upcoming Joint Working Group Meeting in October 2024.
Looking ahead, the year 2025 is poised to be a crucial period for advancing educational cooperation between Pakistan and Russia, with both nations focused on fostering innovation and strengthening academic ties.
