Pakistani students have proudly clinched a Bronze Medal at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 21-30, 2024. This prestigious event saw the participation of teams from across the globe, all showcasing their prowess in the field of chemistry.

The triumphant team from Pakistan was meticulously trained by the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry at the University of Karachi. The four-member team participated under the sponsorship of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The standout performer, Mr. Abdul Rafay from Karachi Grammar School, secured the Bronze Medal, bringing honor to the nation.

The other talented team members included Ms Mahnoor Rashid from Lahore Grammar School, Wah Cantt; Ms Marva from Punjab College for Women, Jaranwala Road, Faisalabad; and Mr. Syed Mehir Ali Shah from Dubai International Public School and College, Mansehra.

Prof Dr M Raza Shah and Prof Dr Khalid M Khan, coordinators of the National Chemistry Talent Contest (NCTC), led the Pakistani delegation in Riyadh. They shared their pride and satisfaction in a meeting at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi (UoK) on Tuesday. The meeting was presided over by Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS.

Reflecting on the rigorous training regimen, Prof Raza Shah highlighted the intensive preparation the students underwent at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry under the STEM Careers Program of HEC. Dr Khalid M Khan noted that Pakistan had obtained full membership in the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2005 in Taiwan, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s academic progress.

Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen extended heartfelt congratulations to the students and their mentors for this outstanding achievement. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi, and Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, also conveyed their congratulations to the team members and their leaders, celebrating their success and dedication.

This accomplishment highlights the exceptional talent and hard work of Pakistani students and educators, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the global academic community.
