A Pakistani PhD student from the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi (UoK), has made history by securing the first-ever People’s Choice Poster Award at the prestigious 5th Commonwealth Chemistry Posters – Building Networks to Address the Goals virtual event.

Competing among over 180 abstracts, the student’s work stood out for its innovative approach and scientific rigor.
According to a spokesperson from the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, the award recipient, Sanya Khursheed, is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Dr M Imran Malik at the HEJ Research Institute. Her award-winning poster was titled “Electrochemical Detection of Creatinine at Picomolar Scale in Human Body Fluids for Diagnosis of Kidney Dysfunction.”
Sanya’s research focuses on developing highly sensitive methods for early diagnosis of kidney diseases, which aligns with global health priorities. Her work captured the interest of over 600 participants, earning her the highest number of votes for the People’s Choice Award. The honor comes with a cash prize of £200 and a certificate of recognition.
Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS, applauded Sanya’s achievement, stating, “This accomplishment not only brings pride to the University of Karachi but also highlights the growing influence of Pakistani researchers on the global stage.”
Senior academics, including the Vice Chancellor of the Karachi University, Prof Dr Khalid Mehmood Iraqi, and Prof Dr Atta-ur Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, also extended their congratulations. They emphasized the importance of such achievements in promoting Pakistan’s academic excellence and strengthening the country’s reputation in international research forums.
The virtual event was organized by Commonwealth Chemistry and the Federation of Chemical Sciences Societies, UK, aiming to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers worldwide.
Sanya Khursheed’s success serves as an inspiration for young researchers in Pakistan, demonstrating how scientific talent from the region is making valuable contributions to addressing global challenges.
