Pakistan’s largest internship program concluded at ICCBS-UOK

Pakistan’s leading summer internship program-2021 in science and technology was concluded at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences Karachi University on Saturday.

As many as 140 students from 25 national and international institutions were provided training in various fields of Biological and Chemical Sciences, Plant Biotechnology, Engineering, Information Technology, Food Sciences, Library Sciences, ISO, and Marketing, etc.

Students from University Cote d’Azure, Nice, France and Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, South Korea, also participated in this largest summer internship program.

Speaking at the Certificate Distribution Ceremony of the 14th Summer Internship program 2021, held at the Golden Jubilee Hall of the international center, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, and Coordinator General COMSTECH highlighted the importance of lifelong learning for every individual in a society, and said that learning was the most effective way for personal and national development.

He said that Islamic teachings emphasized the significance of the process of seeking knowledge. The Prophet (PBUH) said: ‘Seeking Knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim,’ he quoted a hadith, and added that our religion, Islam, stressed the people in a society to obtain “Ilm-e-Nafay”, knowledge, which benefits.

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary mentioned that this ICCBS internship program had become the largest internship program in the country. The international center is the only institution in Pakistan that initiated this kind of national and international-level massive youth training program, which is run strictly on the basis of merit, he said.

He also appreciated Prof. Dr. Asmat Salim, a senior scientist at Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), for organizing such a massive learning program at the national level.

Earlier, Prof. Asmat Salim mentioned that “This is the 14th Summer Internship program this year, the program was initiated in 2008 and since then it is organized every year.”

She said that this year around 1800 applications were received , and after initial short listing, as many as 767 students were selected for online tests and 158 students for online interviews. Finally, 140 students were selected for training and placed in different sections of the ICCBS.

She said, “This year, we have participation from various institutions of Karachi including University of Karachi, Baqai Medical University, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, Lyari, Dow Univ of Health Sciences, Federal Urdu University of Arts Sci and Tech, Hamdard University, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Jinnah University. for Women, Liaquat National Medical College, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, NED University of Eng and Tech, Sir Syed University of Eng and Tech, SZABIST, and Ziauddin University, while from outiside Karachi, we had students from University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Shaheed Benazirabad, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology, Rahim Yar Khan, University of Education, Faisalabad, University of Education, Dera Ghazi Khan, Islamia University, Bahawalpur, University of Turbat, Baluchistan, Mirpur University of Science and Technology, Azad Kashmir and COMSATS University, Islamabad”.

Prof. Asmat Salim also acknowledged the dedicated efforts of all the faculty members, staff, and students of ICCBS who tried their best to train the young students in their respective sections.
