In a significant move towards fostering interfaith harmony and safeguarding the rights of students from minority religions, Prof Dr Shahid Munir (T.I), Chairperson of the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), led a pivotal meeting in Lahore. The meeting aimed to promote inclusivity and protect the rights of minority students in Punjab’s educational institutions.
Key stakeholders, including representatives from Bargad and Norwegian Church Aid, were in attendance. Esteemed figures such as Ms Anya Benedicate, Mr Bilal, Mr Anne Msterson, Mr Shaukat Iqbal, Mr Rizwan Ali, Ms Sabiha Shaheen, and Mr Usama Nasir contributed to the discussions. Their presence highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the goals of the meeting.
Prominent representatives from various provincial universities also attended, underscoring the broad support for this initiative within the academic community. Among them were Dr Nadeem Ahmad Bhatti, Vice Chancellor of Lahore Leads University (LLU); Dr Hadia Awan, Pro Rector of the University of Central Punjab (UCP); Prof Dr Syed Amir Gilani, Vice Chancellor of Green International University (GIU); and Dr Iram Rubab, In-charge of Student Affairs and Women Development Centre at the University of Home Economics (UHE) Lahore.
The meeting’s discussions centered on creating an inclusive educational environment for all students, regardless of their religious backgrounds. Prof Dr Shahid Munir emphasized the importance of interfaith harmony in educational settings and reiterated PHEC’s commitment to ensuring that students from minority religions feel safe, respected, and valued in their institutions.
“This collaborative effort is a testament to our dedication to fostering an inclusive and harmonious educational environment for all students,” stated Prof Dr Shahid Munir. “We must ensure that our educational institutions uphold the principles of equality and respect for diversity.”
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to develop and implement policies that support interfaith harmony and protect the rights of minority students. Participants expressed optimism about the positive impact these measures would have on the educational landscape in Punjab.
