Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has established an education task force to address the national education emergency. Sharif will chair the task force, which will include 19 members such as the federal ministers for Education, Information Technology, and Information and Broadcasting. The federal secretary will act as the task force’s convener, while provincial education ministers and secretaries will also be involved. The World Bank’s country head will serve as the co-convener.

Additional members include representatives from the Asian Development Bank, Commonwealth and Development Office, UNICEF, UNESCO, the World Food Programme, and JICA. Key figures from Pakistani educational institutions and foundations such as the Pakistan Education Endowment Fund, Aga Khan University, the Citizen Foundation, LUMS, and the Malala Fund will also participate.

The task force is tasked with proposing recommendations for educational projects in Pakistan, evaluating the current education system, identifying obstacles to literacy goals, and formulating policies for government schools and education for underprivileged children. The goal is to make significant improvements in the quality of education in the country.

Simultaneously, the prime minister reiterated the federal and provincial governments’ commitment to eradicating polio. Speaking at a National Task Force meeting on Polio Eradication, Sharif emphasized that despite some setbacks with the virus re-emerging in certain areas, efforts to eliminate polio remain steadfast.

Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation, along with ministers, senior officials, and relevant authorities, attended the meeting. Sharif assured Gates of the government’s dedication to polio eradication, noting that Pakistan had recently conducted successful nationwide campaigns and was determined to continue these efforts.

The prime minister expressed gratitude to Bill Gates for his support, particularly in education and health sector digitalization, and invited Gates and his team to visit Pakistan. Gates emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum in polio eradication and other health initiatives, urging for sustained efforts over the coming years to completely eliminate the virus.
