The proposed university will be named Islamabad National University.
What Pakistan’s New PM Imran Khan Said About Education
Per sources in the Federal Education and Professional Training Ministry, 30 acres in the PM House have been allotted for the establishment of the university. The sources said the PM House university would work to facilitate research in various disciplines, as well as provide technical support to numerous government departments for conducting research. Initially, a research institute would be established, which would be later made a university.
The 30-acre tract of land would be acquired by demolishing the polo ground and a recreational mountain within the Prime Minister’s House. The entrance and exit for the university would be from the Fourth Avenue, near the shrine of Bari Imam. The federal ministry aims to establish an international-level institute that can spearhead research in varied fields, the sources said.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan Chairman Dr Tariq Banuri also verified the proposed name of the university to be established in the PM House as Islamabad National University. He said a research institute would be established in the first phase and in the second phase, MPhil and PhD classes would be initiated. He said the varsity would not provide undergraduate studies.
The HEC chairman said there were three main objectives for establishing universities; to impart education, to solve problems faced by the country and the final was conducting research.
Banuri said research would be conducted in four areas encompassing economics, social sector and environment. He said the research institute would provide help to the government and a team of experienced researches would be recruited for the institute. The HEC chairman said the inaugural ceremony for the institute was expected to be held in December.
However, Dr Banuri said the government should provide additional finances for the new project and should not use allocate resources from ongoing projects.
