The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Private Education Network (PEN) has firmly opposed the provincial government’s decision to prolong the winter break in schools. In a statement, the Network called on the relevant authorities to rethink this decision.

Muhammad Saleem Khan, the Network’s president, voiced his strong objection, arguing that the decisions made by education department officials do not take into account the practical challenges. Khan cautioned that such policies could jeopardize the students’ future. He pointed out that students require at least 240 days in an academic year to complete their syllabus. Yet, due to the extended holidays, matriculation and intermediate students are left with only 126 and 91 days, respectively, to cover their coursework.

Furthermore, Muhammad Saleem Khan criticized the decision to hold matriculation exams one-and-a-half months earlier than usual, noting the additional pressure this puts on students and parents. He also questioned the rationale behind extending winter breaks due to teachers’ participation in elections, emphasizing that private school teachers are not involved in the electoral process and therefore the extension should not apply to private schools. Khan also proposed starting school at 9 am as a way to deal with the severe winter conditions.
