Punjab Assembly Speaker, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, emphasized the pivotal role of book fairs in advancing literacy and fostering positive societal changes. His remarks came during the inauguration of Pakistan’s largest three-day PU book fair 2024, hosted by the Punjab University (PU) administration at the Institute of Education and Research (IER).
Joining him at the ceremony were distinguished figures including PU Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Dr Saeed Elahi, Dean Naveed Elahi, Ameerul-Azeem from Jamaat-e-Islami, senior leader Fareed Piracha, renowned religious scholar Nighat Hashmi, as well as prominent columnists, journalists, lawyers, doctors, writers, and poets. The event drew participation from thousands of teachers, students from various educational institutions, and people from diverse backgrounds.
In his remarks to the media, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan highlighted the historical significance of the Punjab University book fair, expressing pride in reinstating this tradition after a hiatus. He lauded Dr. Mahmood’s efforts in revitalizing the fair, which he believed was essential for promoting a culture of reading.
Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood underscored the importance of embracing a knowledge-driven economy, noting that developed nations thrived on their deep-rooted connection to literature. He emphasized the critical role of book culture in fostering national unity and cultivating a spirit of tolerance. Dr. Mahmood also announced the participation of over 140 national and international publishers, offering discounted rates to ensure broader access to books.
The fair, scheduled to run until March 9 from 9 am to 8 pm, attracted thousands of citizens on its opening day, witnessing enthusiastic participation and substantial discounts on a wide array of books. Attendees commended the Punjab University administration for their commendable efforts to engage youth in reading, particularly in an era dominated by digital media.
Simultaneously, the book fair featured the launch of four books by former Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui, at the Waheed Shaheed Hall. The event, attended by PU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Principal Oriental College Prof Dr Nabila Rehman, faculty members, and students, received praise for its alignment with the broader objectives of the book fair.
In conclusion, the PU book fair 2024 not only served as a platform for book enthusiasts to explore diverse literary offerings but also symbolized a collective effort towards promoting a culture of reading and intellectual engagement within society.
