Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood emphasized the importance of research in addressing global challenges during the first degree-awarding ceremony organized by the PU Institute of Botany on Saturday. The event marked a historic moment as the Department of Botany celebrated its 100th anniversary.
In his keynote address, Prof Dr Mahmood highlighted the department’s century-long legacy, acknowledging the contributions of those who established the institution. “The Department of Botany, being the oldest institution in Pakistan, has played a pivotal role in advancing scientific knowledge, and its graduates are shining the name of Pakistan globally,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor praised the department for its inclusion in global rankings, attributing this achievement to the high-quality education provided. He also urged the graduating students to leverage their scientific expertise to tackle modern-day challenges, stating, “As scientists, it is your responsibility to offer solutions for the pressing issues of our time.”
The ceremony was attended by prominent faculty members, including PU Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof Dr Faheem Aftab and Director Institute of Botany Prof. Dr Abdul Nasir Khalid. Over 150 graduates, including PhD, MS, MPhil, and BS students, were awarded degrees.
Prof Dr Abdul Nasir Khalid remarked that the department’s 100-year milestone, coupled with the first convocation, marked a historic moment for the institution. He advised the students to apply their academic knowledge in the practical field and serve the nation with dedication.
Prof Dr Faheem Aftab expressed gratitude to the VC for his support and commended Dr Abdul Nasir Khalid and his team for their efforts in organizing the centenary celebrations and the successful convocation.
The ceremony concluded with Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood presenting degrees to the successful students and extending congratulations to their teachers and parents.
