LAHORE: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Akhter said that while Pakistan is facing the third wave of COVID-19, PU Cancer Research Centre has created interactive heatmaps displaying disparities in COVID-19 infection rates across Lahore data based on 2020.

Prof Niaz Ahmed said tehsil, UC and District level maps can be accessed at: http://covidinpakistan.com.  It is pertinent to note that this data was recorded for the patients that consulted various collection points of these private diagnostic centers in Lahore between May 1, 2020, and November 30, 2020, for COVID19 testing.

Cancer Biologist Nousheen Zaidi has said that this data-driven tool may assist the city government in managing future outbreaks.

She said, “Our Limitations: Maps are only as strong as the information that underpins them. Unfortunately, only a few diagnostic facilities (n=14K) gave us access. Most private labs are not willing to share their data. The data on the government portal is also not detailed.”

She said this work was funded by Punjab University and Social Science Research Council.

Former Chairman of Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) Dr Umar Saif also lauded the project.
