The University of the Punjab (PU)Â Lahore, one of Pakistan’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, is grappling with a severe financial crisis that has resulted in an unprecedented delay in the payment of salaries to hundreds of its staff members. According to a report by a local TV channel on Thursday, around 1,100 employees, including those in grades 16 and above, have not received their salaries for July, causing widespread concern and anxiety.
Traditionally, the university disburses salaries by the 30th of each month, ensuring that its employees are paid on time. However, due to ongoing financial challenges, the university has missed this deadline, leaving many staff members in a difficult financial situation. As of August 8, salaries for the previous month remain unpaid, marking a troubling first in the institution’s long history.
The delay has sparked significant unrest among the university’s staff, who are increasingly worried about the administration’s financial management and its ability to meet future obligations. This financial strain is symptomatic of the broader challenges faced by public sector universities in Pakistan, which are struggling to manage their resources amidst rising operational costs and tightening budget constraints.
Employees have expressed growing frustration over the lack of communication from the university administration and are calling for immediate intervention to resolve the crisis. The uncertainty surrounding their salaries has led to a deepening sense of unease, with many fearing that the situation could worsen if swift action is not taken.
The financial woes of the University of the Punjab have highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the management of public sector universities, which are increasingly finding it difficult to sustain their operations under current economic conditions. As the situation continues to unfold, the university’s staff and their families await a resolution that will bring much-needed financial relief and restore confidence in the institution’s future.
