Prof Dr Ali underscored the essential role of education in empowering women, adding that their active participation in the economy is crucial for the country’s progress. He pointed out that the challenges faced by rural and urban women are distinct and must be tackled accordingly. “Rural to urban migration has created a labor shortage in villages,” he noted, stressing that women should be aware of their rights. Prof Dr Ali further called for a societal mindset shift to foster the development of women and acknowledged global challenges in gender equality, remarking on the lack of a female U.S. president, while celebrating Pakistan’s achievements, including the appointment of Punjab’s first woman Chief Minister.

Dr Nasir Mahmood, Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), echoed these sentiments, stating that despite reforms, women in Pakistan lack true representation. He pointed out that while comprehensive laws for women’s welfare exist, implementation remains the key issue.

Sumaira Samad, Secretary of the Women Development Department, outlined various government initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of women. She stressed the importance of collaboration between government stakeholders and the promotion of research in universities to address women’s issues.

The event featured additional remarks from Prof Dr Iram Khalid, Dean of the Faculty of Behavioral & Social Sciences, who praised the Department of Gender Studies for its efforts. She highlighted the resilience of Pakistani women who continue to contribute to the nation’s development despite limited resources.

Dr Ra’ana Malik, Chairperson of the Department of Gender Studies, expressed gratitude to the attendees and reiterated the department’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights. She emphasized that without women’s participation, achieving peace and development in the country is unattainable. A video showcasing the department’s achievements was also screened during the session.

The conference, attended by academics, government officials, and students, aimed to explore the intersection of women’s empowerment, peace, and security, and chart a path forward in overcoming challenges faced by women across Pakistan.
