The University of Punjab has finally got its first-ever swimming pool, power lifting centre and fitness centre for female students, 136 years after it was first founded.
The facilities have been set up at PU Women’s Sports Complex, Old Campus, whiuch was inaugurated by PU VC Nasira Jabeen on Wednesday, also the first female VC of the oldest university in Pakistan. PU Director Sports Dr Zafar Iqbal Butt, Additional Director Sports Tahira Saleem, Deputy Director Sports Zubair Butt and other officials accompanied the VC during the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jabeen said that the power lifiting centre was the was first-ever ladies weight lifting centre in any public sector university in Pakistan, adding that PU was also planning to set up the first-ever ladies power lifting academy. The VC said women were no less in talent compared to men and had the potential to exhibit outstanding performance in any sport.
Dr Jabeen said facilities like these must be provided to women for their encouragement, as such activities also helped them find better job opportunities in their relevant fields. The VC stated that the administration had taken into account the country’s cultural values and therefore made provisions for a covered and indoor swimming pool, adding that the university had provided state-of-the-art exercise machines for the fitness centre. A high quality water filtration plant has been put in place to keep the pool in properly working and hygienic state. The timing of ladies swimming pool will be from 2pm to 4pm and PU students can utilise the facility free of cost. Women from outside can also use the swimming pool for a charge of Rs 100 per day.
