Punjab Minister for Finance, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, emphasized the crucial role of commerce students in turning the country’s economic challenges into opportunities. He made these remarks while addressing the graduation ceremony at Punjab University (PU) Lahore’s Hailey College of Commerce (HCC) on Saturday.

Addressing the ceremony, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman expressed hope that the graduating students would effectively utilize their knowledge, skills, and values to overcome economic hurdles. He highlighted that Pakistan’s economy is on a path to recovery and emphasized the importance of a positive contribution from commerce students to bolster the national economy. “Any constructive role played by students in the fields of commerce, finance, and business will significantly contribute to the country’s socio-economic development,” he remarked.
He also appreciated the initiatives undertaken by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for student welfare. “The Chief Minister has introduced programs such as the Honhaar Undergraduate Scholarship Program and the laptop scheme, and is distributing cash prizes among high achievers,” said the minister. He further mentioned the launch of interest-free bike schemes and internship programs for students, along with the establishment of IT & Business cities to support the provincial economy.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali paid tribute to teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping the future of the students. He advised the students to seek guidance from their parents and teachers to fulfill their aspirations. “Our country is abundant in resources and opportunities. Hard work, dedication, and positive thinking can help achieve success,” he stated.
Rear Admiral Azhar Mahmood emphasized the importance of teachers in national development and advised students to strengthen their faith in Allah and pursue lawful means of livelihood. He described peace in one’s life as the true measure of success.
Principal Dr Zafar Ahmed highlighted that the Hailey College of Commerce is producing top-tier human resources in the market. He mentioned the introduction of new degree programs tailored to modern industry demands and noted the high demand for graduates from Hailey College of Commerce.
During the event, 470 degrees and medals were conferred upon the graduating students. HCC student Zarak Khan, who won two gold medals in the Asian Rowing Championship, was awarded a cash prize of PKR 100,000. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, PU VC Dr Muhammad Ali also announced the University Roll of Honor for Zarak Khan.
The ceremony concluded with a strong message of optimism and the role of youth in shaping the future of Pakistan’s economy.
