International Seminar on Urban Horticulture

Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali emphasized the importance of advancing research and promoting innovation in urban horticulture to enhance food security and build a sustainable future. He shared these views while addressing an international seminar organized by the Department of Horticulture at PU’s Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.

The event gathered prominent experts, including Mr Erik Arthur van Os and Mr Christianus Petrus from the Netherlands, along with Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and Malik Mohsin Shahzad, Co-founder and Managing Director of Spurt International. Faculty members and students also participated in the discussions.

During his address, Dr Muhammad Ali highlighted the seminar’s role as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration. “The insights shared at this event will significantly contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for our cities,” he noted, appreciating the Department of Horticulture’s efforts in bringing together global experts to address pressing environmental concerns.

Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider underlined the seminar’s focus on the increasing importance of sustainable green spaces in urban environments. “With cities rapidly expanding, there is an urgent need for innovative approaches to urban horticulture to ensure environmental conservation, food security, and climate resilience,” he said.

He emphasized that urban horticulture plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by urbanization and climate change. “Beyond environmental sustainability, urban horticulture helps secure food sources and provides ecological benefits crucial for the health of our cities,” Haider added.

The seminar concluded with a call for fostering innovative strategies to meet the growing demands of urban populations, ensuring green spaces flourish even in the face of urban expansion.
