The Department of Social Work at Punjab University (PU) observed the International Day of the Girl Child with a program titled “Celebrating Girls’ Child Rights: Awareness & Action,” focusing on this year’s theme, “Empowering Girls, Securing Futures.”
The event aimed to raise awareness about the rights of girls and inspire action towards achieving gender equality. Among the attendees were Prof Dr Uzma Ashiq, Chairperson of the Department of Social Work, Dr Noor uz Zaman, Chairman of the Phoenix Foundation for Research & Development (PFRD), along with faculty members and students.
Dr Noor uz Zaman, in his address, shed light on critical issues such as limited access to education and child labor. He urged students to take the lead in grassroots advocacy, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to address these challenges.
Prof Dr Uzma Ashiq reaffirmed the department’s dedication to gender equality, encouraging students to be proactive in the movement for girls’ rights. “This event not only raised awareness but also fostered dialogue, strengthening our resolve to protect and empower girls,” she said.
The program featured a panel discussion involving faculty members, social workers, and child rights activists. The panel explored how social work can play a vital role in promoting the rights of girls, paving the way for future initiatives toward a more equitable society.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to continue working towards gender equality, ensuring that girls have the opportunities they deserve to thrive.
