Punjab University (PU) made history at the Asian Rowing Indoor Championship by clinching an impressive total of nine medals, marking their best-ever performance in the competition. The PU team, under the guidance of Director Sports Zubair Ahmad Butt and Coach Abdul Rehman, secured 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 1 Bronze medal in a competition that saw participation from 19 countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq.

The standout performances came from Abdul Rahman, a student of PU’s Department of Economics, who won 2 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. Zarak Khan from Hailey College also showcased exceptional skills by earning 2 Gold medals. Gohar Ayub from the Department of Sports Sciences added to the tally with 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal, while Iqra, also from the Department of Sports Sciences, contributed 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal to the university’s medal count.

In addition to their individual triumphs, PU students secured two Gold medals in the team events. Abdul Rahman and Zarak Khan were recognized as the best time performers of the championship, further elevating PU’s status on the international stage.

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood lauded the players for their outstanding achievement, emphasizing that their success has brought immense pride to the university and the nation. He acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Department of Sports, coaches, and players, noting that their dedication has paid off despite the challenges posed by limited resources. Prof. Dr. Mahmood highlighted that PU provided Rs. 15 lakh to support the players’ participation in the event, demonstrating the university’s commitment to promoting sports.

Director Sports Zubair Ahmad Butt expressed his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his unwavering support, which has been instrumental in encouraging sports activities on campus.

This historic victory not only highlights the athletic prowess of PU students but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes at the university.
