Punjab Assembly questions role of PHEC

LAHORE: Punjab Assembly session has questioned the role and performance of Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) as the lawmakers had criticized that PHEC had paralyzed the system of universities in the last 10 years.

Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi remarked that PHEC was unnecessarily established by former ruling party, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN). He said that PHEC has kept the system of universities paralyzed for the last 10 years.

He went on to say that we are now mourning the unnecessary tasks undertaken by the PML-N government. He added that there’s a need to change the whole higher education system in the province.

MPA Saeed Akbar raised that there is no check and balance on vice-chancellors as most of them are misusing their powers. “I have seen such mismanagement in the education system for the first time in my life” he added. He said that VCs are not even listening to the complaints or suggestion by the standing committee.

While replying to another question regarding Vice Chancellor University of Okara, Higher Education Minister Raja Yasir Hamayun said that VC Dr Zakaria Zakar will be removed on the charges of misuse of authority being levelled against him. He told the house that the Sahiwal University’s VC had gone abroad on a leave and sent his resignation after being stuck up there reportedly because of the coronavirus
