The Punjab government has increased the education budget by 12.9 percent and allocated a total amount of Rs 448 billion for various projects, departments and institutions of the education sector in Annual Budget 2021-22 here on Monday.
As per the budget document, Rs 54.22 billion were allocated for the development budget for the education sector which included Rs 35.5 billion for School Education, Rs 15 billion for Higher Education, Rs 755 million for Special education, Rs 2.9 billion for Literacy and Non-formal basic education and Rs 6.1 for sports and youth affairs.
The data and figures show some improvement and increment for allocation of different segments. As in the Annual Budget 2020-21, Rs 391 billion was allocated for the education sector which includes Rs 357 for ongoing regular expenditure and Rs 34.5 billion for development schemes. Rs 27.6 were allocated for School education, Rs 3.9 billion for higher education, Rs 555 million for special education and Rs 2.5 billion for literacy and non-formal education.
For school education, the Punjab government increased the budget and allocated Rs 35.5 billion for school education. Rs 19 billion were allocated for Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), Rs 1 billion for Danish School, Rs 6.5 billion for Insaf Afternoon Schools Program, Rs 1.5 billion for the reconstruction of dangerous schools’ buildings, Rs 3.1 billion for textbooks and Rs 4 billion for imparting education through outsourcing of public schools, Rs 500 million for construction of additional classrooms, Rs 14.2 billion for provision of non-salary budget to schools.
For Higher Education Punjab government has increased the budget up to 296 percent and allocated Rs 15 billion for 197 projects including 156 new and 41 ongoing projects. Rs 2.5 billion was allocated for establishing 19 new universities/ sub-campuses, Rs 1 billion for the provision of missing facilities in colleges. Rs 834 million were allocated for Rehmatul lil Alameen scholarships, Rs 16.6 billion for University of Applied Engineering and Emerging Technologies Sialkot, Rs 2 billion University of Taunsa DG Khan, Rs 500 million for up-gradation of Emerson College Multan as University, Rs 3 billion for University of Gujranwala.
The government has increased the budget for special education by 36 percent and allocated Rs 755 million. As per the document 20 new schemes for special education will be started. Rs 310 billion was allocated for the construction of 9 purpose-built building of special education institutes at Gujranwala, Attock, Faisalabad, Mianwali, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Vehari. Rs 150 million was allocated for the establishment of a special children village at Sharaqpur District Sheikhupura.
