LAHORE: Punjab government is planning to allocate Rs 5.8 billion to award the scholarship to four lac female students studying at public schools of Punjab. As the Pakistan Tehrik I Insaf (PTI) led government in Punjab is preparing for its third budget, which is likely to be presented in June, the government has plans to support girl education in the province.

According to sources, Punjab Government will allocate Rs 5.8 billion for supporting girl education and the said amount will be distributed among four lac girls studying at public schools across the province. Every girl will get Rs 1000 per month for the next 12 months, however, the student has to maintain 80 percent attendance for the whole year. Otherwise, the scholarship will be stopped.

The scholarship will be awarded under the Zaver I Taleem project and for this purpose, scholarship cards will be issued to students who will maintain 80 percent attendance. A survey will be conducted in search of deserving girl students.

Oslo Summit on Education and Development 2015 termed Pakistan as “among the world’s worst-performing countries in education”. In Pakistan there are around 22.5 million children are out of school and girls are particularly affected. Thirty-two percent of primary school-age girls are out of school in Pakistan, compared to 21 percent of boys. By grade six, 59 percent of girls are out of school, versus 49 percent of boys. Only 13 percent of girls are still in school by ninth grade. Both boys and girls are missing out on education in unacceptable numbers, but girls are worst affected.

The decision of the Punjab government will support the girl’s education in the province and it will improve the education situation.
