Punjab Govt Appoints Vice Chancellors for 7 Public Sector Universities

On Monday, the Government of Punjab appointed vice chancellors for seven public sector universities in the province. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had previously met with 11 candidates for VC roles on September 2 and held discussions with seven candidates for women’s universities on September 16.The newly appointed vice chancellors include:

Prof Dr Muhammad Ali Shah at the University of the Punjab (PU) Lahore
Prof Dr Shahid Munir at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore
Prof Dr Zubair Iqbal at Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan
Prof Dr Amir Azam Khan at Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering & IT (KFUEIT) Rahim Yar Khan
Prof Dr Aqif Anwar Chaudhry at the University of Education (UoE) Lahore
Prof Dr Inayatullah Khan at the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Taxila
Prof Dr Ahmed Shuja at the University of Gujrat

A search committee, chaired by former bureaucrat Ismail Qureshi and comprising members such as retired Lt-Gen Muhammad Asghar and Farkhanda Wasim Afzal, conducted interviews for these positions in August. Notifications for the appointments of VCs at 11 other universities—including Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) and Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB)—are still pending. Concerns were raised by Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan regarding these appointments, but after intervention from a senior PPP leader, he issued notifications for the current appointments. Sources indicate that the governor may soon leave for a personal trip abroad, after which an acting governor is expected to finalize the notifications for the remaining universities this week.
