Punjab Govt Declares Physical Education Mandatory At School Level

In line with directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Punjab government has announced “health and physical education” as mandatory across 52,000 private and public schools across the province. Administrations of all the primary, middle and higher secondary schools  have been notified to implement the directives with immediate effect.

The education ministry has also issued an official circular to education officers in all 36 districts of the province to ensure timely implementation of the orders. According to the circular, cricket, volleyball, handball, athletics, hockey, football, table tennis, gymnastics, tug of war, cycling, and basketball have been declared compulsory among other sports for school children.

All school administrators and heads have been ordered to provide details about the available sports facilities at their institutes not later than March 31, 2019. The government has also ordered them to improve the facilities at school grounds, provide students with appropriate clothing and to ensure participating students are given refreshments at the sporting events.

For the time being, the provincial government has also issued a sporting event calendar to endorse physical education at school level. According to this calendar, the sporting year will commence from April 1, while events and activities will take place in October throughout the province. Events at local level will be organized from October 1-12, tehsil level from October 15-20 and district level from October 22-20.
