The Government of Punjab launched the ‘Punjab Honahar Merit Scholarship’ program on Monday, marking a significant investment in higher education across the province. This new initiative will provide annual scholarships to 30,000 students from 68 diverse disciplines, targeting those enrolled in 50 public universities, 16 medical colleges, and 131 graduate colleges.
The program, which has a projected budget of 130 billion rupees over the next four years, is set to benefit 120,000 students in total. It aims to ensure that deserving students can pursue their academic goals without the burden of financial constraints.
The scholarship program received approval in July from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who called for an increase in the number of scholarships to further support the province’s youth. During a recent meeting of the Higher Education Department (HED), Chief Minister Sharif announced that the scholarships would fully cover tuition fees for BS degree students at all public universities as well as eight selected private institutions.
“The future of our province relies on our ability to support and nurture the talent and ambitions of our young people. This scholarship is a step towards ensuring that every bright student, regardless of their financial background, can achieve their dreams,” said Chief Minister Sharif.
In addition to financial aid, the Chief Minister emphasized the role of the private sector in improving higher education opportunities, especially for students hailing from remote and underprivileged areas. By encouraging private institutions to participate in the initiative, the government aims to extend the reach of this program and ensure that students from all parts of the province can benefit.
With the Punjab Honahar Merit Scholarship now underway, eligible students are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to secure their educational future and contribute to the growth and development of the province.
