Punjab Reinstates Thousands of District Teacher Educators

The Punjab government has reinstated thousands of District Teacher Educators (DTEs) after an eight-year hiatus, according to 24NewsHD TV channel. The Schools Education Department (SED) Secretary has issued orders for their immediate restoration. Currently, 4,560 DTEs, including 113 in Lahore, are working as regular teachers across Punjab.

The DTE program was discontinued in 2017, and DTEs were assigned teaching duties. With their reinstatement, they will resume their original role of providing teacher training across the province.

In a related development, the Punjab government lifted the ban on teacher transfers in June 2024. However, teachers must have a seniority number to apply for transfers, and those without one are ineligible for online applications. Female teachers have expressed concerns about having to visit offices to obtain their seniority numbers and are calling for this requirement to be removed. Additionally, only teachers who have served at least three years in their current schools will be eligible for transfer.
