The joint action committee of Punjab Teachers Union staged a hunger strike against the government’s decision to give educational institutes under the direct control and supervision of local governments and unfair rationalisation policy on Thursday. Hundreds of teachers joined the strike and hurled slogans against the government.
Speaking on the occasion, district president of the union Ch Tahir Warraich and other office-bearers including Ch Masood Gujjar, Sarwar Qureshi and Ashfaq Ansari said the teaching community had collectively overruled the local government act, adding that the anti-education policies of the incumbent government had led to serious unrest. They said that their senior colleagues liberated themselves from the supervision of the local government back in 1970. “But once again the rulers are pushing education towards destruction by giving it under the control of illiterate local government members,” they added.
The protestors warned the government that the educational institutes would become a den of politics once they came under the supervision of the local councils, hindering the educational activities. They also warned the government that demonstrations will be take place on a daily basis until these new policies were not withdrawn. They also declared that teachers would be continuing their duties while wearing black armbands after Eidul Azha.
