Punjab to rank universities at the provincial level

LinkedIn

LAHORE: Punjab Government has decided to rank universities located in Punjab as the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) has prepared a mechanism, Academia learnt on Thursday.

According to a source at Higher Education Department (HED), Punjab has decided to initiate the ranking of public sector universities located in the province to improve the quality of research and education. It was also decided that every year one university will be awarded as Best University of year.

According to the mechanism of PHEC, 100 marks will be allocated for each university which will include the percentage of Research Innovation, Governance and Management, printed research papers, faculty development and internationalization.
It is pertinent to mention here that Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan has not issued a ranking of universities for the last five years.

The sources further informed that PHEC formed a comprehensive strategy in 2019 to enhance the visibility of higher education institutions of Punjab on global ranking radars – Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE). It was decided in the strategy that PHEC, along with HED, would facilitate the select universities to collaborate with leading global ranking agencies including QS and THE to work on ranking indicators that are relevant to the higher education sector in Asia.

A follow-up mechanism would then be opted to evaluate the progress on these indicators and would suggest qualitative improvements to select universities.
