The National Accountability Bureau Lahore on Thursday arrested Punjab University ex-VC Dr Mujahid Kamran for alleged irregularities during his tenure as the PU VC.

Dr Kamran, who is currently involved with the University of Lahore as its rector, remained the PU VC from January 2008 up until December 2016. According to details, the former PU VC is accused of conducting gross irregularities in the affairs of the university. He is alleged to have approved a number of hirings across the university in violation of set laws and regulations, and many others that were motivated by political interests during his nine-year tenure at the varsity.

He is also accused of illegally getting his wife Shazia Qureshi appointed the principal of the Punjab University Law College. Other allegations made against the former VC include the award of scholarships to blue-eyed students as well as awarding contracts to his “preferred” contractors in complete disregard of PEPRA rules and procedures.

The arrest was made following an approval by the NAB Lahore Executive Board of initiating investigation against Dr Mujahid Kamran. Besides Dr Kamran NAB officials also took four former registrars and a former additional registrar of Punjab University into custody and began probing the alleged corruption. Those arrested include Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir, Dr Liaquat Ali Raas, Masood Amin Athar and Kamran Abid. The arrested men are said to have abetted Dr Kamran to conduct the irregularities.

Dr Mujahid Kamran was the former chairman of the Physics Department at PU from 1995 to 2001. He then served as the dean of the PU Department Faculty of Sciences from 2001 to 2007. He joined the university as a lecturer in 1972.

His arrest follows Monday’s arrest of Sargodha University’s former VC and registrar on various corruption charges, including allowing establishment of illegal sub campuses across Punjab. The officials will be investigated against accusations that they took bribes to allow illegal campuses to operate with impunity.
