Although 10 Pakistani universities have been included in the recently launched Times Higher Education (THE) ranking titled Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018, just one university from Pakistan has found a place among the top 100 institutions.
Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) was the highest-ranked Pakistani university in the list at the 85th spot, followed by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology at a distant 131st position. National University of Science and Technology (NUST) was the next best ranked at 173rd spot. All three top ranked universities in Pakistan are based in Islamabad.
Other Pakistani universities in the list belonged mostly to Punjab, where a total of six universities were included in the ranking. These included University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in the 251-300 band, University of Lahore in the 301-350 band, PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi in the 301-350 band, while Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Government College University Lahore and University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore fell in the 351+ category.
Only one university from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made it to the list. The University of Peshawar was placed in the 301-350 band. Sadly, not a single university from Sindh and Balochistan was included in the list of top universities in emerging economy nations.
The THE ranking only included institutions from countries classified by the FTSE as either advanced emerging, secondary emerging or frontier economies, with more than 350 institutions from 42 emerging nations graded for the 2018 edition.
The advanced emerging category includes Brazil, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey. Countries in the secondary emerging include Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Russian Federation and UAE. Countries in the frontier category include Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Palestine, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Vietnam.
Like in the Asian top university rankings, China remained a dominant force in the list with 63 institutions. China’s Peking University and Tsinghua University ranked first and second, respectively, for the fifth consecutive year. India was the second most-represented country with had 42 institutions included in the ranking. The top Indian university in the list was Indian Institute of Science at the 13th place.
