IITB Ranked At The Top In First Ever QS India Rankings 2019

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was named the top Indian university in the first-ever QS India Rankings 2019 released earlier this week.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is one of the leading educational think tanks in the the world and their word regarded as one of the most-reputable by teachers, students and academicians alike. The latest addition their extensive portfolio of rankings of universities is QS India Rankings 2019, which QS says is an attempt to offer an independent evaluation of Indian educational institutes in accordance with global educational standards. The list includes both public and private universities in India.

The fact that the prestigious QS embarked upon devising an independent ranking for India speaks volumes about the impact and importance of Indian universities and their graduates for the world.

In total, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) managed to take home seven of the top 10 positions on the QS list. Besides Bombay, other IIT campuses named among the top 10 included Madras at number 3, Delhi at number 4, Kharagpur at number 5, Kanpur at sixth place, Roorkee at the ninth position and Guwahati at the 10th spot.

IIT Bombay was set up in 1958 and has become known as the leading institute in India in terms of research and technical education. The university offers an extensive range of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programmes and has linkages with some of the top peer universities and institutes of the world. IITB was named 162nd best university in the world in QS World Rankings 2019 released earlier this year, besides being the eighth best university in the QS BRICS Rankings 2019. The university secured 72.9 points for employer reputation and 43.3 points for faculty/student ratio.

Apart from IITs, other Indian institutes that made it to the top 10 list included Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc) at the second spot, University of Hyderabad at the seventh position and University of Delhi on the eighth spot. India has 24 universities named among the top 1000 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings 2019. Among these, nine are among the top 500 in the world list.

On the contrary, Pakistan has just seven universities placed in the top 1000 universities rankings by QS, only Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) and National University of Sciences and Technology ranked among the top 500. Pakistan’s top institute, PIEAS, is ranked 397 by QS, while India’s top university, IITB, is the 162nd best university in the world.
