Provincial Minister for School Education Murad Raas has proposed n all-encompassing ‘education tower’ to bring all matters and personnel related to education in the province under a single roof.

During a meeting at his office on Thursday, Raas called on his department to submit proposals for implementing the government’s short-, medium- and long-term plans under “the new deal for Punjab” programme, giving them a timeframe of seven days to submit the proposals regarding educational reforms.

During the meeting, various agenda were also taken up for discussion. Participants agreed that there was a dire need of utilizing information and communication technology to resolve the issues of the masses on an urgent basis.

Highlighting the government’s strategy, the minister said the provincial government had decided to enforce Urdu as the medium of instruction in all primary schools from the next academic year, while English would be taught as a subject. Raas also told the participants that beginning March 1, dual class shifts would be introduced in 500 selected primary schools in 20 districts. The effort is part of the Insaf School Programme that aims to achieve the goal of 100 percent enrollment in schools.

The meeting praised a proposal of setting up health rooms in schools. The pilot phase will begin with 1,700 selected schools of the province and expanded to others later. The meeting also discussed the proposal of speedy installation of water filtration plants in public schools and initiating of dedicated sports periods in school hours. The government has already proposed three sports period per week in schools as they would help improve the health of students and teach them key lessons like teamwork and sportsmanship.

The minister was also given a briefing about computerized software application for dealing with posting transfer of teachers. Raas said teacher-friendly policies would be devised save teachers from different various social and economic difficulties during their careers.
