SAU and UBL join hands to initiate a research project

Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam recently signed an MoU with United Bank Limited (UBL) to initiate a research project for the development of improved cotton and wheat seed varieties. Under this project, the university experts will develop a new commodity, pure and climate-resilient seeds of wheat and cotton, which will significantly improve crop yields and enhance the income of the agricultural sector of Sindh province.

In this regard, wheat sowing was inaugurated in Latif Experimental Farm of the University with the joint cooperation of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics and Seed Production and Development Center by Dr Fateh Muhammad Marri, Vice-Chancellor and Arif Ali Shah, Head of South Zone of Rural Banking of UBL.

A short inauguration ceremony was organized at the Seed Production and Development Centre, where Vice-Chancellor Dr Fateh Marri said that due to the recent floods, wheat production and especially in the flooded areas may face a reduction in wheat sowing, while the farmers lack the availability of pure seeds.

He said that Sindh Agriculture University, in collaboration with government and private institutions, is supporting the common farmer; in this context research work on certified seed has been started under the agreement with UBL.

He said that due to the increasing population, there are fears and threats of food shortage in the future, experts from many countries have embarked on a new direction of research to increase the production per acre, he said that with the support of UBL, our scientists research on expansion of certified wheat and cotton seed and new commodities for agricultural development and food security.

On this occasion, Dean Dr Syed Ghiyasuddin Shah Rashidi, Dean Dr Altaf Siyal, Dean Dr Inayatullah Rajpar, Dean Dr Manzoor Ali Abro, Chairman of High Power Farm Committee Dr Mujahid Hussain Laghari, Director Seed Production and Development Centre Dr Zahoor Hussain Soomro, Chairman Plant Breeding and Genetics Dr Shahnawaz Marri, Dr Aijaz Soomro, Dr Munir Mangrio, Director Farms Jakhro Mumtaz Ali, Area Manager (RB) UBL Ghulam Hussain Wagan and others were also present.
