One day training workshop was organized on “Control of Red Palm Weevil in Date palm” at Faculty of Crop Protection, Sindh Agriculture University in the collaboration with Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, under the China-Pakistan Economic Palm Production Technology Project, Dr. Jan Muhammad Marri, Dean Faculty of Crop Protection presided over the session.

Addressing to session, Dean Dr. Jan Mohammad Marri said that date palm is a beneficial fruit and there are many date palm orchards in Sindh and Punjab, but growers have many problems of diseases and red palm and climate threats.

He said that experts should find a scientific solution to the problem of red palm in palm orchards. He said that palm growers in Sindh want new, sustainable and export quality verities in date palm.

Dean Faculty CPT Prof. Dr Jan Muhammad Mari appreciated the efforts of visiting faculty Members University of Agriculture Faisalabad and he urged the experts for future collaboration at more advanced level for the welfare of growers to increase their productivity.

Dr. Imran Khatri Chairman Department of Entomology described the present situation of date palm weevil and its losses and expressed his views for the importance of Pheromones for the management of Red Palm Weevil. He said that research is being done for the prevention of diseases and red palm weevil in the date palm and more research will be done in it and students will also be involved in joint research.

Dr. Muhammad Azam, an expert from University of Faisalabad described the trainees about control techniques of red palm weevil through aggregation pheromone technology imported from China.

Dr. Rashid Wasim Khan said that the future aspects of the program and the benefits of this technology need to be communicated to the palm growers so that the losses of red palm weevil can be reduced and the production can be increased.
