SC orders closure of illegal campuses of private varsities

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Wednesday ordered Higher Education Commission (HEC) to close all illegal campuses of private universities operating across the country.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial in the SCP heard the case regarding the non-issuance of degrees from illegal campuses. While directing HEC regarding the closure of illegal campuses, SC stated that the HEC should provide degrees in a special way to the students who pass out from the illegal campuses and it must ensure the implementation of uniform policies.

The court also remarked that there would be no compromise on the provision of higher education to the young generation, provincial and federal governments should cooperate with HEC to maintain the quality of education. The question was put in front of the Court that whether varsities set up sub-campuses outside its jurisdiction or not? On which the HEC clarified that universities are not allowed to set up campuses outside their limits and special alerts have been issued several to the private universities for setting up illegal campuses. The court said in its order that the HEC claimed that co-operation between the federal and provincial governments was essential to curb illegal activities.

Lawyer Ali Zafar told the court that the court had directed NAB to take action against private universities, to which Justice Umar Ata Bandial remarked that the HEC powers and NAB does not need to investigate the matter. If the commission is weak, it will order the federation to amend the laws.
