The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi (UoK) celebrated “Science Day” on Tuesday to inspire and motivate students to become the next generation of scientists and thinkers.

Participants were briefed on the institution’s research productivity, which led to the graduation of 83 MPhil and PhD scholars in 2024, showing the highest research and academic productivity over the last 10 years. Students from various research domains, including chemistry and molecular medicine, showcased e-posters highlighting their findings and accomplishments.
The inaugural ceremony featured a special lecture titled “Amazing Developments in Science” by Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology. The event also included addresses by Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS; Prof Dr Syed Ghulam Musharraf; and Dr Imran Malik. The day was jointly organized by the ICCBS, University of Karachi, and the American Chemical Society (ACS), Pakistan Chapter.
In his lecture, Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman emphasized how scientific advancements have transformed the world, significantly impacting human life. He discussed groundbreaking developments in biotechnology, nanotechnology, quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and the molecular structure of DNA.
He particularly highlighted the revolutionary role of AI in reshaping healthcare, enabling better diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring. Encouraging young scholars, he said, “Humans are made of stardust, and thus students must shine like stars in the sky of science and technology.” He congratulated the organizers for hosting such an impactful event.
Prof Farzana Shaheen expressed her pride in the young scholars, calling them the “real assets” of ICCBS. She commended their outstanding research productivity over the past year and congratulated the students who recently completed their higher degrees. She also thanked the faculty for their guidance and emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation in Pakistan. She highlighted ICCBS as a leading center of excellence in chemical, biological, and biomedical sciences, offering high-quality education and research opportunities to scholars from around the world.
Prof Syed Ghulam Musharraf, one of the event’s organizers, presented a detailed overview of ICCBS’s academic and research achievements, stating that 83 students completed their MPhil and PhD degrees in 2024. He assured that ICCBS maintained its high standards of academic rigor and merit throughout the year.
Dr Imran Malik, Chair of the Pakistan Chapter of the ACS, spoke about the activities of ACS in Pakistan and highlighted the importance of events like Science Day in encouraging students to explore the wonders of science and its applications in daily life.
