Even if you are a great listener, there might still be an area that needs to be improved. While many of us are used to expressing our views that we often tend to disregard what other people are saying. If you are planning to improve your communication skills then learn to be an active listener, this means more listening and less talking. By doing so, it will help you understand the message better and you will also get the time to provide a better response when it is your time to speak.

2. Body language matters

This includes building eye contact with the person you are communicating with, as well as hand gestures. Just make sure not to overuse it because you may make people feel uncomfortable in this process and it may also defeat the purpose of emphasizing the point you are trying to convey.

3. Be brief, yet specific

Learn to be brief yet specific enough that you provide enough information for the other person to simply process and understand what you are trying to say. Do not ramble or give away too much information. Unnecessary information, words or description won’t do much to help your listeners understand the message you are giving, instead it might cause confusion.

4. Use accurate words to express

Accuracy is vital in any form of communication, be it verbal or written, it is a must. Every time you deliver a message, make sure you have understood the main point. Accuracy helps prevent misunderstandings.

5. Use the right speed while talking

This is another important factor in improving your communication skills. Effective communicators neither speak too slow nor too fast. They know when to pause, when to slow down and when to increase the pace. Because speed can affect the listening experience of your audience and if you want your audience to understand your message, you should learn to speak at the right pace.

6. Ask questions

Many people shy away from asking questions. There is nothing to be ashamed of in asking questions and there is no harm either. In fact, asking questions is always encouraged especially if you fail to understand the message being delivered. To understand the full context of the message, everything must come with clarity because any vague details can be misinterpreted so, if you think you are unsure of something, do not hesitate to ask questions.

Communicating with people requires confidence and skills, which you can surely acquire from tons of practice. While the effects of improved communication may not appear overnight, don’t lose hope and stick with the practice to sharpen your skills.
