SMIU hosts Queen´s Baton Relay

The Sindh Madressatul Islam University hosted the Queen’s Baton Relay, embodied with the message of that it connects people around the world with peace, harmony and love. This happened for the first time in the history of Commonwealth games that the metropolitan hosted QBR.

The ceremony attended by Deputy High Commissioner of United Kingdom Martin Dawson, president Pakistan Olympics Association Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan, Vice Chancellor SMIU Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon, Secretary General POA Mr. Muhammad Khalid Mehmood, SMIU students, principle officers, deans, Adviser to VC Dr. Abdul Hafeez chairpersons, the Commonwealth and Asian Games medalists, athletes, former cricketer Shoaib Muhammad and others were also present on the occasion.

Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan handed over the Baton to the VC SMIU Pro. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon. Later the SMIU students carried it and exchanged from hand to hand to complete the relay at SMIU.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Martin Dawson, Deputy High Commissioner of United Kingdom said that he is very pleased that QBR starts its journey from one of the historical institute of the Sindh Madressatul Islam. This Baton connects communities around the world, he said and added further “Since arrival in Pakistan this is my first appearance in any event and I felt immense pleasure to be here at SMIU among people of this city”.

Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan said that we want to highlight the history of the founder of Pakistan that is why we chose SMIU to start this relay. The production of SMIU and our foundations both have the same mission. “We love SMI because it produced Quaid e Azam and we are really proud on it”. He thanked SMIU for its cooperation for the relay.

Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon VC SMIU said We are very glad to host QBR and it is an honor for us that this relay is started from SMIU. It is also great news for the people of Karachi that QBR would move within the city for three days. “This Baton is a symbol of connectivity which connects people around the 72 countries”.

The VC SMIU Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon distributed shields and souvenirs among the all guests and athletes. While President POA Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan also distributed the shields to the VC SMIU Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon, Registrar SMIU Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Shaikh Directorate  Dirctor Student Affaisr and placement Mr. Asif Wagan and Manager Directorate of Students Affairs and Placement Ms. Zonaira Jalali.

Later on, the British HC, the delegation of POA, organizers of QBR, sports legends and other guests also paid a visit to Jinnah Museum of SMIU and showed keen interest in relics and academic credentials of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and other old students. Guests also saw old records of SMIU preserved at the museum.
