Although the overall public schooling system in Punjab leaves much to be desired, government-run schools in South Punjab are especially in need of some drastic measures to improve the quality of education being doled out to unsuspecting pupils. South Punjab districts feature prominently at the bottom of lists for various indicators devised to gauge educational performance in the province.
The districts in the southern part of the province continue to be the lowest performers in education compared to their peers in upper and central regions of the province, as reported in the 2nd quarterly ranking of districts & divisions for 2018-19. The quarterly district rankings monitor and rank educational and concerned activities in all 36 districts of Punjab on a number of factors. These include student and teacher attendance, visits by assistant education officers, student retention, functioning facilities, toilets, school hygiene as well as literacy and numeracy indicators.
South Going South
According to the ranking, some of the worst performing districts are found in South Punjab region, showing a disparity in the province in terms of facilities and overall rank among the 36 districts. The bottom four districts in the ranking are all from the southern part of Punjab, with Muzaffargarh placed 33rd, Rajanpur 34th, Bahawalnagar 35th and Dera Ghazi Khan ranking at the 36th position among the districts of Punjab.
In terms of overall student attendance, Bahawalpur was on the bottom of the ranking. Also, Lodhran, Bahawlapur and Bahwalnagar fared worst in terms of student attendance at the Kachi level, while the same three districts were found to be the bottom three in terms of student attendance at the 1-5 level.
For school hygiene, the education department set an overall target of 80%. However, Bahawalnagar and Dera Ghazi Khan, again from south Punjab, failed to achieve the target along with Nankana Sahib. Dera Ghazi Khan remained consistent with its lackluster performance for literacy and numeracy as well. It scored the last spot among all other districts for Math, Urdu and English outcomes.
Even in the divisional ranking, Dera Ghazi Khan Division was at the last place among the list of nine divisions in the province, showing how the southern part of the province lags far behind the remaining areas. Moreover, schools in many districts of South Punjab have an alarming shortage of toilets for children attending these schools.
Per the ranking, Dera Ghazi Khan was unable to achieve even a single target set for the number of toilets during the evaluation period – October, November and December of 2018. On the other hand, the top 5 districts have sufficient number of toilets in schools included Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Chiniot and Bhakkar.
According to the overall ranking of the districts, Kasur, Okara, Bhakkar, Pakpattan and Attock took the first five positions, respectively. Kasur took a major leap in its previous position of 19th in the first quarterly report for 2018-19, jumping to top this quarter. Okara slipped one place to land the numer two spot on the list. In the Divisions ranking, Sahiwal was ranked first, Sargodha second, Faisalabad third, Lahore fourth, while Gujranwala was ranked fifth in this quarter’s ranking.
