A somber atmosphere enveloped Karachi University (UoK) on Monday as the dead body of Mukhtar Ali, a promising M Phil student in the International Center for Chemical and Biological Studies (ICCBS), was discovered in a restroom. The incident has sparked a wave of concern and investigation as the authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding this unsettling discovery.
Upon the grim discovery, the local police swiftly transported the deceased student’s body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. An extensive investigation is now underway, with heightened security measures in place, involving both Rangers and the local police to ensure a thorough examination of the situation.
In contrast to the initial speculation, the university administration has offered an alternative perspective. They assert that the student hails from Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and there is a preliminary belief that his demise may be attributed to natural causes. Nevertheless, these claims are far from conclusive, and investigators are diligently scrutinizing every angle.
Mukhtar Ali was part of the cohort that enrolled in the M Phil program at the ICCBS at KU in 2020. A university spokesperson disclosed that the student had visited the restroom at 9 a.m. However, it wasn’t until 6 p.m., after forcibly opening the restroom door, that his lifeless body was discovered. This mysterious delay in the finding has only deepened the perplexity of the case.
The late student was pursuing research in Organic Chemistry under the tutelage of Dr Hina Siddiqui, who was deeply affected by the tragedy. Preliminary inquiries reveal that Mukhtar Ali had no known life-threatening ailments and did not have a history of using any medications.
This is not the first time that the ICCBS at Karachi University has been a site of distressing events. In 2020, a student named Nadia Ashraf from the same center tragically took her own life. Regrettably, the circumstances of her case remain shrouded in uncertainty, underscoring the pressing need for transparency and thorough investigations in such matters.
