Amid spike in COVID-19 cases in Sindh especially in Hyderabad, the Sindh University administration has decided to take department-wise entry tests for admissions to MS and M.Phil degree programs for the academic year 2021.
This decision was taken in a meeting held under the chair of the vice-chancellor of Sindh University Prof. Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro on Friday. In the meeting, a moderation committee was constituted to conduct the entrance test for enrollments to MS and M. Phil degree programs. The concerned dean of faculty, chairmen and directors of the relevant department and a senior professor would be the part of the committee who will be authorized to finalize the question paper for the M. Phil entrance test.
The house allowed the PhD teachers of different SU campuses to become supervisors of M. Phil and PhD scholars at Allama I.I. Qazi Campus but it linked their supervision with the consent of the heads of the respective departments.
The meeting also discussed the existing and revised fee structure of MS, M. Phil and PhD and decided to get its solution through a high level committee for which a 6-member committee was formed including Dr. Wazir Ali Baloch, Dr. Shahabuddin Mughal, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Aghim, Dr. Lachhman Das, Dr. Sattar Shah and Dr. Shahzad Ahmed Memon as members.
The committee after a detailed review of the fee structure of different universities will prepare recommendations for new fee structure of MS and M. Phil and Ph.D programs. It will soon submit its report to the vice-chancellor Dr Kalhoro which will be presented before the meeting of the syndicate for approval.
On the occasion, SU vice chancellor Prof. Dr Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro said that efforts were being made to improve the financial condition of the university. He said that there was no other option but to increase the fees for varsity’s survival.
He said that the admission fee for M. Phil and PhD programmes would be increased in such a way that it would not be a grave burden on the shoulders of scholars. He said that no fund was set up for the pension of the employees in the past, due to which Rs. 1 billion was being paid annually to the retired employees these days.
Dr Kalhoro said that the university could scarcely collect Rs. 440 million per annum from the admission of 22,000 meritorious on-roll students studying in second, third and final year while he compared that the monthly expenditure of the university was Rs. 360 million.
He said that only Rs 6,000 was being charged per year from the students as hostels’ allotment fees, while the students were paying Rs 8,000 per month in private hostels existing in Jamshoro.
He said that no transport facility was being provided to the students by the Karachi University; however, Sindh University was providing its students with the best conveyance amenity by plying as many as 150 buses on designated routes.
The vice-chancellor said that a total of 72 students were studying at the University of Sufism and Modern Sciences, Bhitshah, where a budget of billions of rupees was being given, but not any single penny was being granted to the 6 SU campuses housing more than 6,000 students. As a result, the VC said that SU was suffering financially.
He unveiled that the university was bearing Rs 150 to 200 million as the monthly expenditure of transport during the tenure of previous administration but he significantly reduced it to Rs 2.5 to 3 million per month.
The meeting was attended by the deans of various faculties, heads of different departments, directors and other teaching and administrative official.
