In a groundbreaking move to modernize education and strengthen teacher support, The Citizens Foundation (TCF) has partnered with Khan Academy Pakistan to pilot an AI-powered initiative that promises to transform classroom learning in Pakistan. At the heart of this collaboration is Khanmigo—a cutting-edge, AI-driven teaching assistant designed to support teachers in enhancing lesson delivery, student engagement, and critical thinking in Grades 6 to 8.
Unlike conventional AI tools, Khanmigo functions as a dynamic partner for teachers, helping them deepen their subject knowledge, design interactive lesson openers, craft assessments, and personalize learning materials. The AI assistant will initially be rolled out across selected TCF schools, focusing on improving instruction in mathematics and science.
“This initiative marks a bold step forward in our mission to make high-quality education accessible and engaging for all,” said Syed Asaad Ayub Ahmad, President and CEO of TCF. “We believe technology should be a bridge to better learning—not a barrier. Khanmigo will serve as a thinking partner for our teachers, enabling them to inspire and connect more effectively with their students.”
The pilot programme offers structured prompts and resources to help educators develop classroom materials tailored to their students’ needs. With bilingual functionality in both English and Urdu—and plans to explore regional language support—Khanmigo ensures inclusivity for teachers across linguistic backgrounds.
Zeeshan Hassan, CEO of Khan Academy Pakistan, emphasized the broader vision of the initiative: “Our goal is to democratize access to world-class education in Pakistan. By equipping teachers with smart tools like Khanmigo, we’re making sure AI becomes a force for empowerment, not a shortcut. This partnership with TCF is a significant milestone in reimagining how we teach.”
The programme will also include training for school leaders, ensuring effective and ethical integration of AI tools in classrooms. Teachers will learn best practices for using Khanmigo to foster engaging discussions and create deeper, student-centered learning experiences.
“As we face a national education crisis and a shortage of trained teachers, scalable and cost-effective solutions like Khanmigo are essential,” said Shazia Kamal, Executive Vice President of Outcomes at TCF. “We strongly believe in the power of good teachers, and this technology will enhance—not replace—that human connection in learning.”
While still in its pilot phase, the initiative holds the potential to expand to a broader network of schools, aiming to reshape Pakistan’s educational landscape and close gaps in teacher training and classroom quality.
As AI continues to redefine the global education sector, the TCF-Khan Academy Pakistan partnership stands as a powerful example of how thoughtful innovation can empower teachers and spark transformative change in classrooms across the country.
