Children are always eager to find out new stuff whether related to technology or science. They are mostly curious about how things work around them. Science is one such subject that helps students learn and explore and put their minds to the test.
Here are a few fun science facts that will interest and excite you.

  1. A cloud can weigh up to a million pounds

Have you ever wondered how much a cloud weigh? Because they may look soft and fluffy, but they are not like we think, in fact they are quite heavy. As per research, an average cumulus cloud can weigh about a million pounds which is an equivalent weight of almost 100+ elephants. How cool is that!

  1. Hot water freezes faster than cold water

The notion that hot water freezes faster than cold water is named after Erasto Mpemba. Scientists believe that it is because the velocities of water have a specific disposition while they are hot which allows them to freeze instantly.

  1. Polar bears are undetectable by infrared cameras

Polar bears are almost entirely invisible in infrared version because they are experts at conserving heat. The bears tend to keep warm due to their dense thick layers of fur.

  1. Venus is the only planet to spin clockwise

All the planets in our solar system rotate anti-clockwise but Venus spins backwards. It rotates clockwise about its axis. Scientists believe that the Sun’s gravitational pull on the planet is a very dense atmosphere which may have caused strong tides, due to which Venus rotates clockwise.

  1. Metals tend to explode when in contact with water

Certain metals like sodium, potassium, caesium and rubidium are reactive and instantly tarnish when exposed in air and explode when dropped in water. This is because they only have one electron on their outer shell.

  1. Hawaii moves closer to Alaska by 7.5cm every year

Earth’s crust is split into gigantic pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are in constant motion driven by currents that fall and rise underneath them. As Hawaii remains in the centre of the Pacific plate so every year due to the constant motion of these plates, it’s moving closer to Alaska.

  1. It is impossible to burp in space

You can’t burp in space because the air, liquids and food in your stomach are all floating together so even if you burp, you throw up in your mouth. The problem is because of the lack of gravity, as there is no gravity in space, the gas doesn’t rise to the top which stays mixed in with all other kinds of stuff in your stomach.

  1. Men are much more likely to be colorblind than women

Research explains that the genes responsible for the most common type of color-blindness are found on the X chromosome. Women have two X chromosomes, a properly functioning gene on the other one to make up for that loss but if men inherit the gene of only X chromosome, they will become colorblind.

  1. About half of the human body is bacteria

Science experts estimated that the human body consists of 39 trillion bacteria and about 30 trillion human cells. This is a roughly ratio 1:1.3. Researchers thought that our bodies were much more bacteria than that of human.

  1. Solar flares are extremely powerful

A solar flare is an eruption on the sun, a sudden flash of light. It can release as much energy as about millions of 100 megaton atomic bombs exploding at once. But it is a good thing that Earth’s atmosphere protects us from its radiation.
