Software engineering and computer sciences are the widely growing fields in Pakistan both in terms of education and the job market. Every other company is in the need of skillful computer scientists or software engineers. Their roles are not just limited to one or two kinds of tasks. Instead, there are different subareas under the umbrella of computer studies. You can choose to work either as a developer, a project manager, or any of the various jobs that are available for you out there.

However, it might be possible that you adjust in none of these fields. Most of the students have no idea about what they are going to do in their degree and after completing it. Well, if you are planning to do a bachelor’s in the subject, you should not be one of those students. Here are the things that you should consider before planning a degree in software engineering or computer sciences.

How good are you with the computer?

As the name suggests, you need to be good with computers in order to be good in the field. If you think, the computer, its working system, and everything about it has always been easy for you to understand and operate, this might be the right choice for you. But if you are a student who has never got along with such systems, I would suggest you rethink your idea.

Do you have a natural inclination towards technology?

Along with being good with the understanding of computers, an interest in modern technology is important. See if you are curious to know more about how the technology works, what can be improved in it and how can you know more about it. This curiosity and an inclination towards technology is the sign you want to study the subject.

You should be good with mathematics and statistics

Software engineering is not all about studying computer systems from a surface. The in-depth knowledge of this system needs you to be good in subjects like mathematics. You have to apply statistical and mathematical logic at many places during the whole degree. So, know before choosing the degree whether you are good with numbers or not.

Programming is the toughest thing where students wish they could reconsider their decision

The students who choose this degree without thinking about their decision seriously wish to reconsider it when they study programming. Thus far, programming is the toughest subject that students are afraid of. Get a general knowledge of what this subject is about and if you are interested in it or not before choosing computer sciences as your career.

Internships should be a part of the degree

You only get recognized in the job interviews if you have some experience in the field. Otherwise, you will have to adjust to internships after your degree. So, your degree will be tough but still, you will have to do some internships during the last years if you really want to learn something.

This degree is more about skills

Software engineering or computer sciences are more about skills in the field. You will find several graduates who get very low-paid jobs. Mostly, this is because they do not have a good skill set. If you want not to be one of them, you have to learn as much as you can during your degree.

You will have to be involved in many side-learning projects

Most of the time, the students who get good jobs right after they graduate are involved in many side-learning projects. Some do freelance projects and some are involved in self-learning. This is because you will not learn everything through your courses. In fact, you might end up learning nothing if you are dependent just on your university. So, make sure you are ready to learn everything you need during the degree.

The job prospects

Before choosing this degree, you should consider whether or not you fit well with the related jobs. As far as the job prospects are considered, they are great both in Pakistan and abroad. There are project management jobs, programming-related jobs, jobs related to quality assurance, and many others. Do your research before you finalize your decision about doing this degree. These are just the common things that most students need to consider. You might have some other concerns about the degree but whatever it is, you need to have an informed decision. Good luck!
