The University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK) marked Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration, showcasing the profound connection between Pakistan and Kashmir. The day was filled with a range of activities, including a majestic flag-hoisting ceremony, a thought-provoking seminar, an inspiring art exhibition, a tree plantation drive, and a grand rally, all emphasizing the spirit of freedom and unity.

The seminar, titled “Pakistan’s Independence Day: A Message of Freedom for Kashmir,” was a central feature of the celebrations. Former Prime Minister Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan, in his keynote address, highlighted the crucial role of a strong, stable, and prosperous Pakistan in supporting the Kashmir freedom movement. He called on Pakistan’s political leadership to prioritize the country’s stability and praised Pakistan for consistently championing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination on the international stage. He also expressed deep gratitude to the people of Pakistan for their unwavering solidarity with the Kashmiri cause.

Former Chief Justice (R) Syed Manzoor Hussain Gilani, another distinguished speaker, emphasized the importance of universities in shaping the future of society and fostering awareness among the youth. He raised a reflective question about whether Pakistan, founded on a strong ideological basis, continues to adhere to that ideology, urging the nation to reconnect with its roots and remember the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle.

Minister of the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Prof. Taqdees Gilani, spoke passionately about the unbreakable bond between Kashmir and Pakistan, declaring that no force in the world could sever this connection. She thanked Pakistan for its ongoing political, diplomatic, and moral support for the Kashmiri cause, despite the challenges it faces domestically.

UAJK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi underscored the significance of celebrating Independence Day as a way to honor those who sacrificed for freedom. He encouraged reflection on the goals that led to Pakistan’s creation and the need to continue striving toward achieving them.

Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir, also addressed the gathering, reinforcing the deep bond between Kashmir and Pakistan, rooted in their shared faith. He reminded the audience that the Kashmiri freedom struggle is an extension of the Pakistan movement, and the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people are a testament to their steadfast commitment to the cause.

Director of the Kashmir Policy Research Institute, Dr. Raja Muhammad Sajjad Latif Khan, reaffirmed that despite India’s efforts, it has been unable to break the bond between Kashmir and Pakistan. He expressed optimism that the day is not far when Jammu and Kashmir will achieve freedom, and all will celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day together.

The day’s celebrations began with a grand flag-hoisting ceremony in front of the Admin Block at UAJK’s Chehla Campus. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi raised the national flag, offering prayers for Pakistan’s security and stability and for the early freedom of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. A smart contingent of the university’s security staff presented a salute, followed by a freedom march to the Education Hall, with deans, principal officers, faculty, and staff in attendance.

A tree plantation campaign was also launched as part of the festivities, with former Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi inaugurating the initiative by planting saplings on campus.

In addition, UAJK’s Department of Art and Design organized an art exhibition in the Education Hall, which captivated participants and drew significant interest, adding an artistic touch to the celebrations.

The events at UAJK were a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between Pakistan and Kashmir, with every activity reflecting the spirit of freedom, unity, and hope for a brighter future.
